There are many different techniques to meditation, including guided and encouraging awareness, through to transcendal using our own mantra, sound, syllable or words repetitively to relax the mind.  Zen meditation is a form of Buddhist meditation and focuses on clearing the mind and many others, which also include movement, and/or prayer.  Personally, I like to chill out, relax and listen to soothing voices and focus on my breathing to help reduce stress of modern day life. 

Simple Candle Meditation

Clear the Room of Negative Energy

This can be as simple as lighting your candle, or waving about a sage smudge stick, but not everyone needs to do this.  Clapping your hands before starting is enough.  If you can, reduce the lighting in the room you plan to mediate in.

Background

A little low music can help us relax when new to meditating.  Soothing and calm, with no vocals.  A smart speaker helps you to play a meditation mantra, and gives some lovely options.

Take Your Position

Stretch your arms up high and if you can, then touch the floor.  Choose where you will sit, lie down, or use cushions to prop you in a comfortable seating position with feet on the floor.  If lying down, bend your knees to allow this and perhaps use a rolled up towel or bolster under your knees if needed.  Try and keep your spine straight while you focus on around 10-15 minutes at the beginning, to learn how to get your head into the mindset of relaxing.  I prefer to sit on the floor for this, with cushions at my back and under my knees, with a small table in front of me with my chosen candle.

We can bring in colour therapy with candle choice, for example:

  • Rainbow colours to signify hope, happiness, confidence.
  • Black to whoosh away negative energy and allow contemplation and respect.
  • White to signify new life, new beginnings.
  • Red for passion, action, love and courage.
  • Blue for healing, wisdom and strength.

Breathing

For simple unguided meditation, begin to focus on your breathing patterns, and how shallow your breaths are.  Concentrate to take slower, deeper breaths, concentrate on your breathing, breathe in and count to three, holding your breath and then slowly exhale, fully releasing that breath, pushing it out until you feel your abdomen contract.

Candle Flames

Try to have your candle at a comfortable level for your eyes to gaze into.  As you do your breathing exercises, begin to look into the flames, trying to keep your eyes on the flame at all times.

Look for:

  • Shapes of the flames as they flicker and move, dancing.
  • Look at the candle flames, think about the different colours you see.
  • Consider the thoughts come to the forefront of your mind, what are the images you see?
  • Try to let go of your problems and concentrate just on the flame.

Ground Yourself

Try to medicate for 10 minutes.  Don’t worry, as it takes a little practice to get right.   Before you are finished, it’s important to bring yourself back to reality and connecting with the physical life once again.

An easy way would be to:

  • Close your eyes.
  • Take a few deep breaths, imagining the breath travelling to the tips of your fingers and toes.
  • Raise your knees and place your feet flat on the floor, imagine them connecting with the earth, like the roots of a tree, solid, steady and secure.
  • Bring your knees towards your chest if you can, keeping your feet on the floor, and wrap your arms around your legs.  If you can’t do this, simply place your hands on your knees, feel the gentle peace surrounding you as you bring yourself slowly back to reality, imagining yourself strong, alive and aware.
  • When you’re ready, count down from 5,4,3,2,1, and open your eyes, and back to the room.
  • Take your time getting up, possibly have a pre planned glass of water for drinking before you stand up.

Electrical Facials: Direct High Frequency

In the field of facial electricals, direct high frequency is sometimes forgotten in the scramble for muscle toning microcurrent, but it’s not one to be dismissed.

Direct High Frequency works right on the skin, in the surface, helping to resurface, tone and deal with breakouts and spots. Combine this with an LED near infrared and blue light treatment, it can be incredible for the skin.

  • A course of 6 treatments is recommended. (One Per Week) then maintenance at every 4-6 weeks once the skin has improved.

Best Homecare Aftercare

As always with targeted treatments, aftercare is important.

  • At the end of every treatment, you will have a germicidal layer on your skin (germ/bacterial free skin). Please try not to touch your skin.
  • Avoid make-up for up to 12 hours.
  • Avoid the sun where possible, and use a high factor good quality sunscreen.
  • Keep hydrated with at least 2 litres of water a day.

Microcurrent – Background to The Non Surgical Facelift

Microcurrent treatments have been used by medical professionals and celebrities for years. Good results were achieved where facial muscles had been paralysed by Bells Palsy, and proved themselves able to relift sagging muscles in the face.

In the industry for therapy and beauty, microcurrent has become the leading beauty treatment for prevention and treatment of ageing skin, and is a more modern version than the older style Faradic electrical treatments.

The Wavelength.

The microcurrent we use is tiny. It is in the range of

  • 0.8Hz to help lift deep facial muscles.
  • 10Hz to help lift superficial facial muscles.
  • 20Hz to stimulate circulation.
  • 300Hz to help with lymphatic drainage.
  • 500Hz penetrates just below the skin, for a skin booster.

What Do Microcurrent Treatments Do?

What Will I Feel During Treatment?

While your treatment is being performed, you may feel.

  • Some clients may experience tingling, a metalic taste in the mouth or some mild flashing lights.

How Many Treatments Should I Have?

Fab at 50 – Glitchy Hormones Be Gone

Tired, upset, feeling low, wanting to hide away and wishing the days away, yes we all feel like that sometimes. Some of it is down to our pesky hormones too. Who knew they were going to be so troublesome for us as we get older? It’s not fair, it really isn’t.

It is, however, sometimes down to the ever present challenge of ageing. Some people accept it gracefully, others feel down and miserable, and a few just want to hibernate and wish the world would go away.

Sometimes, knowing why we feel so bad, can help us get out groove back. Perhaps our bodies aren’t as good as they used to be, or the mirror shows an older face beaming back at us, but here’s a little reminder of what happens to us as we hit that mid life hormonal challenge.

It didn’t happen overnight. In our thirties and forties, our hormones start to ebb and flow, and the per-menopause can begin to bite. Yes, it can be as early as that. I entered peri-menopause in my early thirties and was fully menopausal before my mid thirties, so although it’s usually older, those pesky hormones can strike early as egg reserves dwindle. With eggs beginning to run out, our bodies may miss out a cycle of ovulation here and there, meaning that stress levels can rise and weight gain/inflammation can rear its’ ugly head.

In our later forties and early fifties, nobody bats an eyelid at a lady flushing and blushing, as it’s acknowledged silently, without as much as a wink or a blink, that a hormonal woman may be going through the ‘change.’

Thinking back to my own history, one day I remember vividly, still makes me cringe. In my thirties, early menopausal hot flushes rose from my toes to reach the top of my head in frequent rolling waves of unpleasantness. I used to be adept at excusing myself before it got past my stomach and elbows, heading up to my armpits.

In an office environment, it is often quite easy to sidestep for a few minutes and avoid being a sweaty betty in public, but at times, it can be quite an embarrassment. I was talking to a male colleague and with no escape route, I felt a hot flush begin to surf up and out. The colleague had a big issue that needed dealt with urgently, and I couldn’t concentrate on what was being said, for trying to hold my breath and attempt to mentally banish the hot flush back into my ground rooted boots.

The hot flush hit my cheeks with the force of a mini tsunami. With no escape, and two people manning the door behind, it got to my forehead, at which point, my colleague looked mildly horrified and stumbled over his words. He’d obviously thought I fancied him……. Bless!! The point is, that if I’d been in my late forties or fifties, he might have offered to get me a glass of water, open a window and understood what was going on. I gave up on decorum, reached for a few pieces of paper, swiftly folded them in half to fan my face, and apologised for the early menopausal heebiejeebies!!!!

That was the point I decided that honestly is the best policy when in a pickle where the menopause is concerned. There really is NO hiding it if hot flushes are your big go to symptom…

The pesky oestrogen and progesterone hormones causes loads of symptoms as they begin to get out of balance. Although symptoms differ from person to person and in intensity too, there are some common issues that can point towards our hormones making us enter a challenging phase.

  • Period problems.
  • Hot flushes (see point 1).
  • High cortisol and increasing stress responses.
  • Low mood.
  • Sleep disturbances.
  • Low libido.
  • Anxiety.
  • Brain fog (see trying to suppress a hot flush in point 1, and everyone else thinking brain fog 🙂
  • Thyroid issues.
  • Weight gain.
  • Dry skin.
  • Joint pain.

Barrelling through the peri menopause is one thing, but living in full menopause is a totally different thing. There are opotions nowadays. HRT didn’t work for me, but it does help lots of people avoid being in the situation I found myself in with the hot flush above. To do that, you have to see a GP and have your hormone levels tested, to make sure your issues really are with your hormone levels. It was quite a blow so young in my thirties, to find out that I’d entered full menopause, but at least I had a reason for my symptoms.

Managing stress and learning to live with life changes is another way to help us cope. There will be times we will be on top of it, and times some of us aren’t. We know the goal is to exercise, eat well and take the right supplements, and sometimes we recognise mental health needs adjusting to reduce stress levels too.

CPD – Continuing Professional Development

CPD has been around for a long time.  It builds and lays the foundation for proof for good professional practice in any environment.  The emergence of competency as standard has meant that the importance of CPD in the workforce has grown.  CPD, in short, simply stands for those activities in which you carry out, that keep your skills, knowledge and experience up to date in your relevant industry.

There are many reasons for the growth of CPD in importance as a competency, including:

Speed of Change

It’s not enough to go to college or university, and expect that to be the end of learning.  The theory we learn has an ever decreasing lifespan due to increases in technology, knowledge, and understanding.  Many years ago, it was acceptable for therapists to use the same spatulas and wax for clients, simply straining the wax to use with a new client.  Students today would hold their hands up in horror at the potential for cross contamination, yet for years, that was the norm.  I can guarantee that even now, there are therapists out there who still double dip with spatulas and continue to strain wax between clients.  They have not kept up with the trends in the industry, and have fallen behind with their skills and knowledge.

Quality Control

Industries now have a minimum level of quality assurance, whereby all staff are trained to the same base level in order to perform any particular role within an industry.  They are also required to keep up to the same levels with ongoing training and development.  Where the biggest change here has happened, is in the expectation for staff to manage their own levels of quality control, via meeting minimum standards.  It is each persons own responsibility to ensure they are up to date.

Legal Requirements

The law demands that standards of competence are met.  The cost of insurance policies, and their recent rises, have been a determining factor in making organisations require personnel to take charge of their professional development to meet their standards.  CPD as a core policy within an organisation can be a strong factor in determining minimum competence levels, and reducing the size of risk for legal indemnity.

Professional Standards

It’s been mentioned several times already.  Each industry must maintain the minimum standards of competency required among their members.  For the beauty and holistic industry, the Guild of Beauty Therapists decides which levels of qualification meet their standard for membership, and from then on, members are expected to continue their own development, to remain current and skilled.

Competition

If you don’t keep up to date with modern practices, you can be sure some of your competitors will.  If the wax straining double dipper clients find out the new salon down the road has a more sanitary way of carrying out waxing treatments, and lets all their clients and their friends know, you can be sure the wax strainer is going to lose some of her clientele, until the point of no return, and not enough clients to remain in business.

Types of CPD

CPD comes in many forms.  In years gone past, it would only be for courses, seminars or organised meetings.  Savvy organisations now know that any activity that increases a skillset, broadens knowledge and promotes better safety and practice, is also a candidate for CPD.

Some forms are:

  • part-time teaching
  • in-house skills development
  • reading technical articles
  • carrying out activities allocated with CPD points by professional institutions
  • courses and seminars
  • distance and open-learning
  • membership of professional institutions

For CPD at work, it can be training carried out in-house, through the devolution or sharing of others knowledge, skills and expertise to others in the business.  Each activity can be awarded a set number of points to add to your personal CPD total for the year.

For a minimum level, 10 points is accepted, however 30 points per year is expected as a satisfactory amount.

What is a CPD Point?

It’s a unit of measurement that shows you have improved your skills and knowledge by carrying out relevant Continuing Professional Development in your industry.  You should keep a record of your CPD in a form of an evidence portfolio.

CPD Portfolio

Quite simply, a CPD portfolio could just be a piece of paper that you record what you did, when you did it, what the learning was that took place, what skills you learned and how you can put those into practice.

Record the following:

  • Date
  • Type of activity, ie course, assignment, reading, researching
  • Length of activity time
  • Number of CPD points
  • Name of activity
  • What has been learned
  • How learning can be implemented in the workplace
  • How the implementation will be evaluated, ie how successful
  • Potential follow up activities
