Benefits of Massage

Massage can be a refresher for the whole body. It’s one of those things where there are so many options that it’s difficult to pick any one treatment. When we look for treatments, there are several we can choose from.

Body Massage

Under body massage, there are a whole host of different options.

Some are:

  • Full Body
  • Back, Neck & Shoulders
  • Hot Stone Full Body
  • Hot Stone Back, Neck and Shoulders
  • Swedish Massage
  • Deep Tissue Massage
  • Sports Massage
  • Reflexology
  • Lomi Lomi
  • Bamboo

Breaking these down is a bit of a minefield, as there are often so many different terms for the same thing. In most circumstances, ‘body massage’ and ‘swedish massage’ will be the same or very similar, in that it is a relaxing, hands on and feel good massage. ‘Deep tissue massage,’ will have more pressure, depth and tools may be used to maniplate muscles.

The one that is different from all the rest is the ‘sports massage.’

Sports massage therapists ‘should,’ have significant training to enable deeper manipulation of muscle and tissue. Short courses and beauty or holistic therapy courses do not qualify the therapist to perform a sports massage. For this option, ensure you choose your therapist well, and ensure they suitably qualified.

Treating Yourself

Therapy level body massage is a treat. There will be some minimal manipulation of muscles and several knots may be found and worked on, but on the whole, it should be therapeutic and for the most part, relaxing.

5 Benefits of Massage

Here is a short guide to help you decide if a massage is for you.

1 – Helps with Stress and Tension

Reducing stress levels tends to be the ultimate goal for most of us in this fast moving world of 24 hour lives. When we add the risk of stress related conditions that can affect our lives, such as headaches, and insomnia, massage looks like an acceptable option.

2 – Eases Muscles Tension and Pain

Knots, pain, injuries and bad posture can have a significantly negative impact on our lives as a whole. Massage improves the flow of blood to muscles, which in turn, helps to reduce pain and increase flexor reach.

3 – Aids Sleep and Reduces Stress Levels

With the increase in the feel good hormone released during enjoyable activities like massage, getting to sleep can be easier, and sleep can be more relaxed and comfortable with some people reporting reduced effects of conditions such as restless legs and muscle aches.

4 – Immune System Boosting

In the same way that massage aids sleep and reduced stress levels, the potential of reduction of symptoms from inflammatory and immune system issues can be noticeable.

5 – Improve Blood Circulation

All that relaxing movement can help push newly oxygenated blood as far as the fingers and toes, providing vital nutrients and helping you to feel better and be more energised.

Microneedling and Topical Anaesthetics – The Law

Scores of therapists and salons still use illegal topical anaesthetics to numb the skin during procedures such as microneedling. Some councils have begun licensing their use, and checking on individual salons, to ensure compliancy.

Professional Beauty, an industry leader, said in 2019, that some therapists are abandoning microneedling treatments. New rules from some local authorities say they cannot sell or apply anaesthetic to their clients prior to microneedling.

Although I am in Scotland, and some local authorities do not yet require licensing for skin needling, it’s important to realise that almost all of our insurance companies are based in England. We are required to follow their rules. The problem would occur if a therapist or salon owner either applied or supplied a topical anaesthetic which is classed as illegal and a reaction occurred.

Most therapists are not medically trained in complications management. Topical anaesthetic is covered under the Medicines Act. If there is a reaction to a topical anaesthetic, there is little to zero wiggle room for treatments for therapist and salon.

Salons and therapists are also not allowed to reuse any derma rollers. This still applies, even if the salon/therapist uses an autoclave to sterilise equipment. Microneedling is now required to be single use pen cartridge or derma roller only.

The actual boundaries are not 100% clear for self sourced anaesthetic by clients but what is, is that if a client has a reaction to an illegally sourced and applied anaesthetic, the therapist and salon will be fully liable. For many local authorities, the same applies to microblading and spmu therapists. Many brands and councils will now require a doctor or nurse to be on the premises and apply prescribed numbing cream.

The rules are varying, but only topical anaesthetic which is over the counter and used by the client themselves, is likely to be covered under insurance rules for therapists.

Microneedling Without Topical Anaesthetic

Salons without a doctor or nurse applying and being present during the treatment at all times, are putting themselves in a risky position. The rule of thumb is that if a therapist is not a doctor or nurse prescriber, they cannot properly supply and apply a topical anaesthetic.

What does this mean for microneedling? Not that much really. Yes, microneedling is a little uncomfortable for some of us, including me, but others hardly notice it and say it’s like tiny pinpricks.

Good things don’t always come in not so easy packages and not all good things feel incredibly great. The good thing about zero anaesthetic, is that the client (you) can feel any part of the skin where the sensation alters. This allows the therapist to stop if an area feels numb, and stops the treatment from causing any damage to the skin.

Microneedling Protocol

  • For the face, depths of up to 1mm is a maximum for most brands during treatments. Brands will usually state their maximum depths.
  • The maximum body depth for microneedling for most treatments is 1.5mm.
  • Microneedling will not be carried out where there are any active breakouts, cuts or abrasions on the skin.
  • At depths of 0.25 – 0.5 on the face, there is little sensation or pain. At 1mm, the sensation may be unpleasant, however pain is not significant.
  • On the body, a little discomfort may be felt at depths of 1.5mm.
  • If unsure, it might be a good idea to begin treatments with a shallow depth, and increase as treatments progress.

Million Dollar Facial depths for Microneedling and Mesotherapy, are a maximum of 1mm for the face, and 1.5mm for the body.

Micro-needling, also referred to as skin needling or collagen induction therapy, is a process where a professional therapist runs a tool over the stretch mark area. By creating minor injuries where skin has been damaged, Micro-needling encourages your body to repair damaged skin through increased production of collagen and elastin.

Medi+ Homecare

  • Week 11 – Peel

Is it Effective?

Stretch marks are scars that form in the middle layer of skin, and like scars from injuries, they do not go away on their own. While they may fade over time, getting rid of stretch marks requires undergoing a treatment that can penetrate the top layer of skin and affect the middle layer of skin where stretch mark scars form.

The process of Micro-needling allows a trained therapist to use long enough needle to impact middle layer of your skin. When skin is damaged through the Micro-needling process, it triggers the development of collagen and elastin in your body, which will promote skin regeneration in the damaged areas. The skin regeneration process can encourage new skin growth in areas with stretch marks, improving the tone and texture of skin and reducing the appearance of stretch marks.

In addition to treating stretch marks, Micro-needling is also commonly used to treat wrinkles and acne scars. The treatment requires only a topical anaesthetic, and is considered a safe and low-risk treatment option.

Reasons to feel good with Ice Globes, and step up your skincare routine.

History of the Ice Globe Market

Developed by a famous facial specialist around 2018, ice rollers have quickly developed a reputation for being the current must have and in demand accessory for facial treatments. Ice globes are also perfect to maintain salon treatments at home on an ongoing basis.

Ice globes really do make a difference to skin, by the use of cryotherapy to help with skincare issues we all battle with daily, as well as being soothing and comforting experience.

There have been many different brands of ice globes which have flooded the market since their invention, however choosing a suitable pair from a reputable company is the best choice.

The principle is worked on placing the ice globes in the freezer or the fridge for 10-30 minutes before using them. Some globes are not suitable for putting in the fridge, and must only be used in a fridge.

Good quality globes will be made of medical grade anti-freeze liquid which is safe to use in a freezer. They will also have high quality glass with shatter proof qualities, hypoallergenic, cruelty free, vegan and suitable for all skin types.

Ice rollers aren’t used in beauty treatments by professionals for no reason. Therapists, celebrities and clients have received huge benefits from using them in their daily routine. There have been no end of publicity rounds in Vogue, as well as many other magazines, extolling the use of ice rollers and what they can do for us.

Used regularly, ice globes can help to improve skin tone, health, and overall appearance. The recommended use is morning and evening for best results and bringing the ice globes into part of your daily skin care routine.

Benefits Of Using Ice Globes Morning and Evening

  • Helps reduce dark circles under the eyes and reduce the appearance of swelling and puffy skin.
  • Reduce the appearance of large pores and roll away dead skin cells that may eventually cause blocked pores.
  • Helps smooth the complexion.
  • The cold therapy calms the skin, helping to reduce rosiness and irritated pockets.
  • Contracts blood vessels and helps with skin tightening.
  • With the cryotherapy effect, ice globes can help boost collagen, especially when used in conjunction with suitable products, or to maintain the effects of professional treatments.
  • Brighter and fresher looking skin.
  • Soothes the skin after salon procedures.
  • Boosts healthy lymphatic drainage.

How To Use Ice Globes at Home- Safely?

  1. Follow manufacturers instructions on storage and usage. You can store freezer compatible globes safely in the freezer for the next use.
  2. Care for them by cleaning each time you use them with antibacterial spray or wipes, and gently cleaning them with a clean cloth.
  3. Remove ice globes from the freezer or the fridge, and place in a bowl of cold water before using. If they are frozen together, don’t try to pull them apart.
  4. Apply a serum or gel to the skin before using globes on the skin. Never use frosted globes directly on the skin.
  5. Don’t hold ice globes over one part of the skin for too long, or you may suffer skin burn.
  6. Use a rolling motion rather than a dragging motion to use rollers, and prevent tugging/pulling on the skin.

What to expect with Microneedling/Mesotherapy salon treatments in Aberdeen!

Microneedling has the effect of creating many very small and superficial wounds. The treatment is usually carried out by the use of a derma roller, or a special piece of equipment known as a derma pen / microneedling pen.

Mesotherapy is the introduction of a serum or hyaluronic acid to the surface of the broken skin from injection or needling, which will take advantage of the ability to settle deeper into the cells of the skin, allowing for better hydration, faster action, and increased plumpness of the skin.

Superficial microneedling helps the body to stimulate more effective use of fibroblasts, which in turn, creates new collagen and elastin. What that means, is that the skin is traumatised without causing damage to the surface of the skin.

Recovery time is speedy, and there is very little downtime or pain involved. At a depth of 0.25 – 0.5mm, there is a definite knowledge that the skin is being manipulated, however the feeling is a minor pinprick sensation. The needling helps to strengthen collagen in the cell walls and aid connective tissue repair. This is the process which can hep reduce the visibility of broken capillaries. Fibroblast production aids tissue repair and improves the look/texture of skin, helping to rejuvenate and tighten skin over time.

Barriers to Treatment – Who Can’t have Microneedling?

As Microneedling and Mesotherapy require the skin to be broken as part of the treatment, there are some conditions where Microneedling and Mesotherapy cannot be carried out. You will complete a consultation with your therapist, where we can discuss appropriate treatments. Even though Microneedling and Mesotherapy are not suitable, there may be other treatments which can be carried out.

  • Under 18.
  • Current localised skin infection.
  • Pregnancy / Breastfeeding.
  • Keloidal Scarring.
  • Autoimmune diseases such as HIV, HEP B and HEP C.
  • Heart conditions.
  • Raised moles.
  • 7 days before or 14 days after any injectable treatment.
  • Cancer/skin cancer until 12 months post treatment.
  • Ongoing Chemotherapy and Radiotherapy.
  • Blood clotting disorders.
  • Blood thinning medication.
  • Recent Roaccutane use, or any other medication to treat skin conditions in the last 12 months.
  • Active acne.
  • Localised eczema or psoriasis.
  • Skin allergy to metal.
  • Low pain threshold.
  • Avoid numbing agents.
  • Rheumatoid arthritis.
  • Diabetes.

Before your Treatment

  • Avoid excessive sun exposure 24 hours prior to treatment.
  • Discontinue use of topical retinoids 48 hours prior to treatment.
  • Change your appointment if you have active breakouts or open lesions.
  • Wait six months following oral Isotretinoin/Roacutane use.

What to Expect

  • Your therapist will be wearing PPE, including an apron, gloves and a mask to carry out this treatment.
  • There will be no soft furnishings in the area where treatment is carried out. Disposable single use sheets and towels may be used.
  • There will be a sharps box on the trolley, and trolley handles/microneedling pens will be barrier taped. Don’t worry, these are simply for hygiene reasons during your treatment.
  • Pictures will be taken before and after the treatment to assess changes and reactions to treatment.
  • Your skin will be cleansed, analysed and cleansed again. We will pass a toner potion across your skin to prepare the skin for treatment, and finish the preparation by sterilising the area of face or body which is about to be microneedled.
  • Microneedling is not painful, however some clients may find it uncomfortable.

Aftercare

  • Your therapist will use a nourishing balm to soothe your skin. It will help your skin to stop from drying out after your treatment. Using balm for a few days after treatment would benefit your skin and aid the healing process.
  • Avoid excessive exercise and sun exposure for 72 hours post-treatment.
  • Avoid AHA’s and BHA’s 48 hours post-treatment.
  • It is recommended to avoid other invasive facial treatments 4 weeks following the Microneedling Treatments.

Top 5 Dermaplaning Myths

We don’t have to go far these days to find articles from people who say that a dermaplaning treatment makes their hair grow back thicker, faster, darker…. There are all sorts of reasons for why people may think this, but we’ll take a look at it in more depth.

Dermaplaning Explained

Dermaplaning is a process where peach fuzz is removed from the face, by the use of a scalpel blade. The dead skin cells in the top layers of the skin are also removed, allowing for better penetration of products if the treatment is followed by microneedling and or mesotherapy. Dermaplaning is also a good first step in a chemical peel procedure, as the top layers are removed. This allows the peel to work better, without having to find its’ way through the surface dead skin cells.

Benefits of dermaplaning also include soft, smooth and glowing skin, allowing the smooth flawless appearance that comes with application of make up.

Myth 1 – Dermaplaning Hurts

Dermaplaning shouldn’t hurt. It’s far less painful than waxing, sugaring, threading or plucking. Pictures of surgical aestheticians in PPE, with sharps bins and blue barrier tape on surfaces, and handling a tool with a sharp scalpel, can instill a basic fear that dermaplaning might be painful.

When we break it down, dermaplaning is a shaving technique and one of the least painful methods of hair and dead skin removal. Shaving our legs doesn’t hurt, unless we nick the skin with the blade. Dermaplaning is the same. Having our faces shaved is simply something that men have been doing safely for hundreds, maybe thousands of years, without the PPE. The difference with dermaplaning, is that we tend to treat women and cover the whole face instead of just the beard area. We remove the hard to see vellus hair (peach fuzz) and treat softer areas of skin.

You will feel a soft scratching and some light pulling while dermaplaning is being performed, but it’s a relaxing procedure for most people.

Myth 2 – Peach Fuzz Grows Back Thicker/Darker/Beardy

This is simply not true. Dermaplaning cuts the hair, and does not involve any damage to the follicle of the hair. When we dermaplane peach fuzz and don’t maintain the procedure, the hair might feel blunt to begin with as you feel the cut edge rather than a rounded end.

By the time peach fuzz has fully grown back in, it will be the same as it was before the dermaplaning procedure. Shaving will not make any difference to how thick hair grows back, or how dark. For some people, the hair will grow back again quickly, for others it may take a few weeks, and for a few, it may take longer.

Myth 3 – Dermaplaning Takes Too Long

Again, this isn’t necessarily true. The actual dermaplane part of a treatment lasts from a few minutes to 20 minutes, as the therapist works around your face. A full dermaplane facial will last for approximately 45 minutes to an hour, depending on the content of the facial.

Myth 4 – Dermaplaning Causes Spots

We don’t carry out dermaplaning facials on skin with active breakouts. The exfoliation part of dermaplaning is removing the surface dead skin cells and will help prevent future breakouts by helping to unclog pores in those upper layers. As the upper cells are removed, there is less risk of future breakouts. Dermaplaning does not have the ability to prevent future active breakouts, however it does help reduce the frequency when combined with a regular routine for acne prone skin.

Myth 5 – At Home Dermaplaning is as Good as a Professional Treatment

Professional medical grade scalpels will give very different results to a razor that you buy and wield yourself. When it comes to the face, there are many contours and delicate, soft areas to treat. With that, comes the risk of not manipulating the skin properly at home, or not properly being able to see the areas that you intend to dermaplane. A trained dermaplaning technician is also removing the top layers of dead skin, which cannot be done with any regular blade, as the scalpel is required to go deeper than simply cutting the hair. Salon products will also be medical grade for the best results.

Conclusion

Dermaplaning helps us maintain a healthy glowing skin and with regular maintenance, will help reduce the appearance of pigmentation and fine lines and wrinkles.
